Harrell - John Thomas

John Thomas Harrell was born in Madison, Indiana, May 11, 1832. He passed peacefully away at 6 o'clock p.m. February 23, 1907, at his home in Scott township, this county. Having moved with his parents to this county when eight years old, he has lived in it continuously ever since with the exception of two years, when he resided in Fountain county. On July 8, 1852, he was married to Mary Jane Cook of near Waveland, who died April 7, 1853. To this union, a child was born who is also dead. On February 4, 1856, he was united in marriage to his second wife, Elizabeth Frances Moore, of near Alamo. For more that fifty-one years they traveled life's road together, sharing each other's joys and sorrows. Five children, two of whom died in infancy were born to them. At his country's call for volunteers, he enlisted in the latter part of November 1861 and was honorably discharged at Texana, Texas, on the 21st day of December 1865, returning home February 2, 1866. He became a member of the Baptist church several years ago and has been a consistent member ever since. For the past year he has been very much devoted to God, while appealing to him he expressed himself. "o! I am so glad that God has lifted me out of the awful place of sin that I was in," "all is well praise God." I am just waiting from my saviour to come.' And after when we would be praying with him he would shout and praise the Lord. His last words on this earth when spoken to answer to a question was; "Amen, I am going home to Jesus" Not one word of complaint escaped his lips during his last illness. He was a faithful husband, a kind and self-sacrificing father, and will be missed sadly by his family and friends. He leaves a wife, two sons and one daughter, two sisters, two brothers with a host of other relatives and friends who deeply mourn his departure. A BROTHER

John Thomas Harrell, an old soldier of Scott township, died at his home near Pawnee, Saturday evening at 6 o'clock from the effects of cancer. He was born May 11, 1832, and was therefore almost seventy-five years old. He was a member of the Baptist church and a good citizen. The funeral occurred this afternoon at one at the First Baptist church in this city and was conducted by Rev. G.D Harger. Interment took place at the Masonic cemetery.
